According to US Wine Writer James Suckling, the new Heggies Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay is “a stylish chardonnay that has a striking, mineral core of fresh, zesty fruit,” awarding it 93 points. “The aromas of peaches and grapefruit are nicely framed in clotted cream, apricot and praline notes. The palate has compelling richness, as well as handy composure and depth.”
Australian Wine Writer Regan Drew also scored the wine 18.75/20 saying the wine is “The flagship of the Heggies range and it shows. The colour of the wine youthful soft gold with distinct green highlights. Distinct bacon/smoky meatiness to the nose along with buttery citrus and citrus zest, sweet brioche and a briny/mineral flinty-shell component. Offers complexity on the just-medium bodied palate with savoury, earthy elements: nutty meal and that aforementioned meaty/smoky quality from the barrel works. Bittersweet citrus over white stone fruit to a juicy, lip smacking finish of bristling acidity.”
The Heggies Vineyard Estate Riesling 2017 has been rated 95 points in the Halliday Wine Companion 2020: “This is a tip-top wine from a great vintage. Its blossom-accented bouquet is expressive and attractive but it’s the perfectly presented palate that puts its quality beyond doubt. It’s precise, balanced, elegant and long; lime and lemon flavours centre stage with acidity providing context.”
The release of Heggies Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay is the culmination of more than 30 years of growing and making Chardonnay from our beautiful family-owned estate vineyard high in the Eden Valley. This completes our new trio of Chardonnay wines –the Reserve, Estate and Cloudline Chardonnays – which display the depth and diversity of this variety across the vineyard. Each wine has been specifically crafted to create an individual expression of the lean quartz soil, varying combinations of clones and the different microclimates in each block.
At the heart of this is the Reserve which comes from the most picturesque and special site of all. Known simply as ‘i block’ and nestled overlooking the lake with its cooling breezes it is immediately apparent when you walk between the vine rows that there is something truly unique there.
“It’s a feeling you get – that innate sense of the right variety, the right clones, in the right place – and you know a great wine cam be made from that one special place.” Teresa Heuzenroeder, Winemaker

'This gem of a Trophy-winner comes from the esteemed Heggies vineyard. At 550m altitude, it’s one of Australia’s highest vineyards and is a patchwork of separate plots dedicated to a particular variety. Each plot receives bespoke care and attention, with changes in canopy management from vine to vine; even the rows between the vines can alter.'
