Conditions for 2002 vintage were outstanding for the quality of Eden Valley wines but unfortunately this was balanced by low quantity. Early spring rains and low temperatures during the ripening season gave rise to full flavoured grapes of exceptional balance which were harvested at their optimum.
Heggies vineyard is harvested by hand and transported to the winery in small lots. A portion of wine is left for long maturations on skins and other parcels are run to barrels where fermentation is completed in oak. The intensity of each parcel was maintained during fermentation and barrel maturation until final selection from barrel to blending. Minimal fining and filtration are utilised to maintain the integrity of fruit.
Heggies Vineyard Merlot 2002 is a deep ruby red. Lifted redcurrant and blackberry fruits jump out of the glass. These aromas are supported by darkly toasted cedar from maturation in new D&J barriques. Upon leaving the wine in the glass for a few hours the concentration of aromas increases with the addition of violets and roasted meats. Redcurrant fruit immediately fills the mouth, showing a fine mid palate with velvet tannins. The wine is medium bodied, displaying an array of flavours and textures that reflects the unique Heggies Vineyard.
